Description
Data source is ETOP05 &/or (the world data base) with a spatial
resolution of roughly 5' (5 nautical miles) with depths given
in feet. Largest grid section includes oceanic regions surrounding
the LTER site including the eastern Bellingshausen Sea, Drake
Passage and the Antarctic Peninsual (55S to 70S latitude, 55W to
80W longitude). The LTER Grid is an area west of the Antarctic
Peninsula and covers an area of 900 km (roughly parallel to the
peninsual) by 200 km (on to off-shore). Within this grid, cardinal
lines spaced every 100 km along the peninsula and cardinal points
spaced every 20 km on to off-shore comprise the basic LTER sampling
stations.
Bottom Topography
Data source as above. The Palmer Grid is within the small box shown
to the south east of Anvers Island. Fine-scale sampling positions
near Palmer Station were selected to provide a set of fixed station
locations within the Zodiac boating range of the station with some
selected to be along the normal in/out access route of research
vessels visiting the station (For more detail on the sampling grids,
see Waters & Smith, 1991).
