Our education and outreach program actively engages within both formal and informal settings seeking out best practices, innovative approaches and opportunities to infuse science knowledge into learning. In an effort to strengthen and transform learning and increase student and teacher success in science, we seek to provide educators professional development opportunities and develop innovative educational resources to extend learning about the marine environment to the general public.
From practice and experience we understand that science knowledge continually changes. Concepts build upon other concepts and rather than encourage separate and unique content resources we build products that are interdisciplinary in nature, uniquely integrating the biological, chemical and physical science that parallels the research of the Palmer LTER program. This approach ties together various perspectives in science, aiding students in understanding the integrated relationships between various content areas.
Many of our instructional materials encourage discussion, reflection and complex problem solving. We support materials where students are acquiring knowledge through reading, integrating literacy into the content areas of instruction to provide context for learning. We infuse lessons with multi- modal approaches to engage students effectively. We link our lessons to best practices objectives and provide literature for professionals needing updated information on topics like inquiry learning, problem-based learning, case studies in the classroom and science literacy. All of our materials are aligned with National Science Standards (NSS) and the Ocean Literacy principles.
