LTER Coordinating Committee Meeting

Oceanographic Cruise in Santa Barbara Basin

Timetable for cruise on the NOAA Research Vessel R/V McArthur

There is a good chance that the R/V McArthur will be working in Santa Barbara Channel (SBC) during the week of our LTER CC meeting. Several researchers at UCSB have a collaborative agreement with NOAA, which is head agency for the Channel Islands National Marine Sanctuary (CINMS), to carry out NASA and ONR-supported research within the channel using NOAA ships.

We plan to redeploy a deep sea mooring and to carry out a routine oceanographic transect across the Channel when the R/V McArthur is in our area. The McArthur is a relatively large research ship (for the channel) and the Sanctuary Manager is open to the idea of the Palmer LTER creating a "show & tell" for interested CC members while we carry out our normal research routine. Much of the shipboard sampling is similar to what we do in the Antarctic, and our PAL PIs will be available to discuss the research activities in the context of the Palmer LTER. Note, given the cost of ship time, we will be carrying out actual research sampling and add the overview discussion by PAL PIs.
