11Sep98 The Ship is leaving PA tormorrow, Sept 11th. There has not been ice thick enough to walk on this year so no one has been out there to measure it. 13Sep98 LMG turned back north....25' seas and some cargo problems. No one on the ship got much sleep. Now the ship is two days late should be in Wed if it can get through the Drake. 18Sep98 Subject: R/V LM Gould By now you have heard plenty of rumors regarding the situation with the LMG cruise 98-8. ASA and the NSF have been in constant contact to keep abreast of the progress of the ship and have been considering all options and scenarios available. As of this morning, the ship was underway and headed south to Palmer Station. They are in clear water but they will hit ice again before reaching Palmer. We will speak to the ship at 1500 (Denver time) and determine it's progress and sailing conditions. At that time we will confer with NSF, ship's personnel and the Denver staff to make decisions on how to proceed. Please be assured that our goal is to keep future cruises on schedule and minimize impact on your projects. I will keep you informed of any changes and decisions made as soon as I become aware of them. If you are scheduled to be on the LMG98-8A cruise, you will want to stay in contact with your e-mail accounts over the weekend as decisions may not be made until then. Ken Doggett Sr. Asst. Supervisor, Laboratory Operations,Antarctic Support Associates 20Sep98 The ship is insight. We have been able to see it for the last 5 or 6 hours but it is having to break through ice and it is really slow. They are going to unload and reload and they are off again, Hoping to be out of here by tomorrow night. We had a seal pup born on Wednesday out in Hero Inlett. I also went out in the Harbor and droped a net. Caught one krill in 4 drags. Not much else in the samples but I still need to spin them down. Diane Wetter, ASA Lab 21Sep98 Subject: LM GOULD schedule The LAURENCE M. GOULD (cruise LMG98-8) departed Palmer Station this morning shortly after 0800 Denver time. We anticipate continued difficulties with both weather and ice in the next 24 hours, so we won't have a good guess at an ETA Punta Arenas for at least a day. The scheduling priority continues to be an arrival on or very near October 15 at 60S, 50W--the work area for the UV irradiance studies. Because of the delay, a major adjustment to the current schedule (published as of 8/25/98) is necessary to have a reasonable chance of success with this priority. In order to satisfy the above science priority and also to support projects at Palmer Station, it will be necessary to reduce the Copa and Palmer Station calls from two to one, and to combine them onto LMG98-8A. LMG98-9 will then proceed directly from Punta Arenas to the work area at 60S, 50W, with no stop at either Copa or Palmer Station. The consequences of this are simple in concept but painful in practice: personnel scheduled to go to Palmer or Copa on LMG98-9 will have to arrange ticketing (and their lives, of course) so as to arrive in Punta in time for LMG98-8A, which may depart as early as this coming Sunday, September 27. Personnel impacted are largely from LTER, plus some from Copa, ASA, and S-003. All should already have been notified by telephone this morning. Meanwhile, since there seems to be little likelihood that the GOULD can arrive in Punta before late Thursday, here's a provisional schedule based on that ETA: Thur, Sept 24 Arr PA; PM Fri, Sept 25 In Port Sat, Sept 26 In Port Sun, Sept 27 In Port; depart PM for Copa Mon, Sept 28 Transit to Copa Tue, Sept 29 Transit to Copa Wed, Sept 30 Transit to Copa; arrive PM Thur, Oct 1 Open Copa; depart PM for Palmer Fri, Oct 2 Transit to Palmer; arrive PM Sat, Oct 3 At Palmer; depart PM for Punta Arenas Sun, Oct 4 Transit to PA Mon, Oct 5 Transit to PA Tue, Oct 6 Transit to PA Wed, Oct 7 Arr PA; PM Thur, Oct 8 In Port Fri, Oct 9 In Port Sat, Oct 10 In Port Sun, Oct 11 In Port Mon, Oct 12 Depart for 60S, 50W Tue, Oct13 Transit Weds, Oct 14 Transit Thurs. Oct 15 Arr 60S, 50W I will update this as information becomes available. Regards, Jim Holik Manager, Marine Science, Antarctic Support Associates 22Sep98 Subject: RE: LM GOULD schedule As of 1200 (Denver time) today, The LM GOULD was making slow but steady progress north through the ice. Her position was 63 12S. 61 26W. It now appears that the schedule sent out yesterday will slip by at least a day. Arrival in PA not likely before Saturday, 26 September. We will issue a revision of the schedule as soon as the vessel clears the ice. Jim Holik Manager, Marine Science, Antarctic Support Associates 23Sep98 Subject: RE: LM GOULD schedule Update At 0830 Denver time, the LMG was at 61 25S, 62 49W, in open water, and heading north at full speed. Barring weather delays, the vessel has an ETA in Punta Arenas on the morning of Saturday, 26 September. We will endeavor to do a 2-day port call and depart PA on the evening of Sunday, 27 September. Based on ice imagery and conversations with Arctowski Station on King George Island, we know that the Bransfield is covered by 10/10, thick, fast ice and that it extends well east and west of King George Island. Attached FYI, is the ice image showing the cover. We will monitor conditions outbound from PA and evaluate the feasibility of opening COPA en route to Palmer Station. If we cannot open COPA on the way south we will again check conditions during the northbound trip. Every effort will be made to open COPA during the time allowed. ASA travel is currently trying to re-book all Santiago passengers on flights out of Dallas tomorrow (Friday). These bookings are in addition to those that were just made for Miami-Santiago flights tomorrow. In the event that the Miami airport is open tomorrow, the Miami bookings will be used, and the Dallas ones cancelled. Travelers will be contacted by ASA as soon as information on the Dallas connections is available. Please do not contact travel as they are swamped right now. If you need to talk to someone, call me. GOULD PUBLISHED9/25/98 10:52 OPERATING SCHEDULE 1998-1999 General Information: Maximum cabin berthing is 28 including ASA staff. In addition, two berthing vans will be available to provide additional passenger space as needed. These will increase the berthing limit on transits to Palmer Station to a total of 36. Opportunities exist on oceanic transits for collection of underway scientific measurements. Please contact Jim Holik, Manager of Marine Science, holikji@asa.org. Numbers shown in the #PAX column below are current totals of all assigned or planned berthing spaces. No numbers in this column indicates the information is not yet available. When the ship discharges or takes on passengers during the cruise (such as at Palmer Station), both the initial and final pax numbers are shown. Grantees should plan to board the ship the night before the scheduled departure date, and to depart the ship the morning after the ship returns to port. Port calls generally require five days. This can sometimes be reduced to four days to meet mission-critical requirements.
