Questionnaire: SIO Open House 2003 PAL LTER: Palmer Long-Term Ecological Research Program KBaker and BSimmons -There were a total of 113 surveys collected. -Age breakdown was approximately: 8-15yrs 10%; 15-20yrs 20%, 20-40yrs 25% and >40yrs 45%. -The gender representation was fairly even (54%males and 46% females) except for ages 8-20 where there were the ratio was (30%male and 70%female). -How the openhouse was heard about varied (flyer, invited, newspaper, word-of-mouth, tv/radio, internet, school) except 30% of the teachers indicated they were invited. -In general awareness of programs was as follows: SIO 90%, Birch Aquarium 70%, NSF 60%, USAA Program & Palmer Station 30%, LTER 25%. -The average use of computers in those older than 20 was 95% with teachers indicating 100%. -The average skill level with computers was 50% above average. -The general internet usage was medium to high for 90%. -Desire for communications with a science research team was on average 80% and for teachers 100%. -Distinction between the artic and antarctic was low for those aged 8-20. -Understanding of the artic geography was low in general. -The size of Antarctica was understood in general by 70% of those surveyed except by 30% of those aged 8-15.
