94Jan PD94-01: Annual cruise 11jan94-07feb94 Austral summer LTER time-series cruise carried out in three phases. Phase I covered the standard transect lines 500 and 600. Phase II was composed of a high density grid for sampling bird foraging area within 50 km of Palmer. Phase III covered North and South inshore stations as well as the standard transect lines 400 and 300. Work was done on the R/V Polar Duke PD94-1. Robin Ross served as chief scientist. Phase I & III standard transect sampling speed, typically 4 to 5 hrs between stations (ie 5 to 6 stations per day) using 20km spacing for BOPS with XBT between stations (10km grid). Station sampling included: BOPS, selected deep CTD, phytoplankton productivity, krill observations. Phase II included a 50km x 50km grid that included: bird census and biosonics observations plus water samples for surface chl and XBT's. Sampling West Coast of Antarctic Peninsula including near Palmer and LTER grid. Palmer Stations: B-J*3 PHASEI(12-17 Jan): 500, 600 grid lines PHASEII(19-24Jan): HD 50kmx50km grid;sediment trap deploy 610.07 PHASEIII(25Jan-6Feb): N/Sinshore, 400, 300 grid lines Deep CTD casts at selected sites. Concentrations of both krill and Adelie penguins were lower, while the concentration of salps was higher in January 1994 than in January 1993. See LTER general information. Rapid shipboard sampling within the large scale LTER grid and an inshore grid within 50km of Palmer station. No diels were done. See individual data sets. Core measurments available two years after the cruise.
