lps 93aug 26aug93-25sep93 Seawater subsampled from surface BOPS bottle, some GoFlo and under-ice samplers LPS Total and dissolved lipopolysaccharide ng m-1 ng C m -3 Palmer Stations C and E, all "even" grid stations, some GoFlo and under-ice stations Samples collected directly from BOPS bottle , GoFlo or brown PE bottle containing under-ice samples into sterile 15 ml centrifuge tubes and immediately stored at -20*C for determination of total lipopolysaccharide (T-LPS). A sub-sample is centrifuged to remove particulate LPS (P-LPS) and the supernatent is retained for measurement of dissolved LPS (D-LPS). Analysis is by the Limulus amoebocyte/turbidity assay. LPS is present in the cell wall of gram negative bacteria and is present at concentrations proportional to total cell carbon. P-LPS ([T-LPS]-[D-LPS]) measurements are extrapolated to bacterial biomass using laboratory derived conversion factors. southern ocean, lter, lipopolysaccharide Univ. HI, Marine Science Bldg.
