94Dec PD94-12: SantaClaus cruise 08dec94-27dec94 SantaClaus (Studies in Antarctica: Coupled Linkages Among microorganisms) was a special-focus microbiology cruise focused on the trophic coupling among various microbial assemblages including heterotrophic bacteria, archaeobacteria, phytoplankton, protoans and viruses. Sediment traps from PD94-01 deployment were retrieved and re-deployed in Palmer Basin. Hugo Island Automatic Weather Station (AWS) was installed and Racer Rock AWS serviced. Experiments included ice algal work in Crystal Sound, coastal phytoplankton bloom work at Paradise Harbor, and tethered spectral raidance buoy deployment. Work was done aboard the R/V Polar Duke PD94-12. Dave M. Karl served as chief scientist. Several day stations held at selected sites in additon to LTER grid line 600 stations. Time-series sediment trap moorings deployed in January 1994 on PD94-01 in Palmer Basin were recovered, two near Hugo site and one in Crystal Sound. Sediment Trap Mooring Sites in Palmer Basin and Crystal Sound were visited. Work also conducted at Paradise Harbor, Dallman Bay and Deception Island. Racer Rock and Hugo Automatics Weather Stations were visited. Spring bloom in full swing in Paradise Harbor. Heavy pack ice in Crystal Sound. Microbiology processes impact tropic coupling. Sediment trap mooring sites, an ice site and a coast bloom site will be visited for multi-disciplinary microbial process work. Data were collected by a variety of methods, including continuous underway measurments of selected surface ocean properties and local meteorology. Continuous water column profiles of conductivity, temperature, beam transmission, PAR, fluorescence and light scatter were obtained using the CTD system. Discrete water samples were obtained using rosette-mounted Go-Flo bottles. Sinking particulate matter was collected at several sites using sequencing, bottom-moored sediment traps.
